Galapagos aboard Angelito Yacht 8 Days ITINERARY "B"

Superior Tourist - Cruise
Includes:
  • Transport
  • Sight Seeing
  • Food

ANGELITO was the nickname of the grandfather Angel, who in 1960 helped his two grandsons Leonardo and Hugo Andrade to build their first fishing boat. This boat enabled the Galapagos born brothers to earn a living and support their families.
As pioneers in the Galapagos, they gave up fishing and converted their boat to be able to tour visitors. By leaving fishing, they took the important first step to actively promoting the protection and conservation of the Galapagos Islands.
After more than a decade of working in tourism, the brothers used their experience that they learned from that first small boat to build a new Yacht, the ANGELITO I., which was launched in 1992.
Evolution goes on! The ANGELITO I. was totally refurbished in the summer of 2013. The high quality of craftsmanship was maintained while the amount of space and comfort level was increased. The 8 double cabins are now on the main deck and include large picture windows, private bathrooms, individual air conditioning and the option to have twin beds or a double bed.
With 2 new engines, 2 new generators and all new electric and electronic installations, the safety, which is our first priority, is guaranteed.

ITINERARY DAY BY DAY:

Day 1

You will arrive at Baltra in the morning. After going through immigration and baggage claim, you will be met by an Angelito staff member and transferred to the yacht. You will be shown to your cabin where you will have some time to settle in before lunch and a welcome briefing.

BACHAS BEACH (SANTA CRUZ ISLAND)

After a light lunch, we will visit Bachas Beach to see the crabs, flamingos and sea lions. The beach is coral sand decomposed, so it is soft and white, this site is favorite to nest marine turtles. We will hike to see a wide variety of wildlife, including flamingos, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts and sea lions.

Day 2

MOSQUERA ISLET

Imagine a beach rising from the ocean floor in the middle of nowhere. Imagine sand grains as soft as sugar. Now imagine a sea lion colony and a fabulous sunset. You are here! Mosquera Islet is by far the best beginning of a Galápagos journey. This volcanic uplift that dates from 100 thousand years ago, a geological treasure for an admirable start. On the shore is easy to encounter Galápagos sea lions, sally light foot crabs and shore birds. Visitors are welcome to swim or snorkel from the beach.

DRAGON HILL (SANTA CRUZ ISLAND)

In the morning you will visit Dragon Hill on Santa Cruz. The visitors’ site at Dragon Hill is located in northwestern Santa Cruz Island and consists of a 1,600 m long trail that runs through three different environments. The beach is very rocky. At high tide it’s a nice place for snorkeling. At this visiting site you can find vegetation of the typical intertidal zone and dry zone.

Day 3

TAGUS COVE (ISABELA ISLAND)

A tour along the cliffs in a zodiac will give the visitors a good chance to see the Galapagos penguin, the flightless cormorant and other sea birds. From the landing dock a 30-minute hike along the trail up to the top of the cliff takes you to a viewpoint of Darwin Lake, an uplifted ultra-saline lake. You can also see several volcanoes from this location. The route of the trail is about 1800 meters, and was considered a favorite spot for pirates and whalers, a tradition continued with the names of boats and ports. At the start of the walk, we find a small cave where we find inscriptions dating to the 1800s. The trail is mostly gravel, and leads into the interior of the island along Darwin Lake. During the walk, you can see various land birds and identify the characteristic vegetation of the arid zone. Finally, we observe the lava fields of Darwin Volcano. Darwin Lake rests upon a “tuff” type cone, contains saltwater and its depth is approximately 9m. It has no fish and few forms of life due to its high salinity.

ESPINOZA POINT (FERNANDINA ISLAND)

Only 30,000-100,000 years old Fernandina is the youngest island of the Archipelago. This immature shield volcano is less than an instant in the geological time scale. Not even your wildest imagination can give you a better setting to experience the start of life on an island. The whole Island is cover with hostile worthless lava. However, at Punta Espinoza the shoreline is teeming with life. Reptiles, birds and mammals all coexisting, singing and sexing. It is a living museum with piles of marine iguanas, playful sea lions, hard working flightless cormorants, dwarf penguins, busy Sally light-foot crabs and much more. Don’t forget to look around because Galapagos Hawk is always on the hunt. The site is a true cradle of evolution. Snorkeling with turtles, iguanas, cormorants and plenty of fish is the best way to refresh after the lava walk.

Day 4

URBINA BAY (ISABELA ISLAND)

The hotspot under the Galapagos generates intense volcanic activity. The west islands are the youngest and most active of the Archipelago. Located in the center of Isabela, Alcedo Volcano is remainder of how volatile this Islands are. On the west shore line of Alcedo lays Urbina Bay. The landmass of the inlet was uplifted in 1954. More than ¾ of a mile of shoreline were created, and many coral reef extensions where exposed to air as the upheaval rose the seabed. The brand new land became a perfect nesting terrain of the most beautiful land dragon. The land iguanas of Isabela are the largest in the Galapagos and in Urbina the colorful population offers a great example of their growing potential. The impressive yellow, orange/brown iguanas roam the low lands looking for flowers, fruits, leafs an shoots of their favorite plants. Also, when the rains arrive is possible to see giant tortoises sharing the land with the other primitive looking reptile. Urbina is miniature reminder of a Jurassic time.

ELIZABETH BAY

Isabela Island constitutes almost half of the entire surface of the Archipelago. It is nearly 100 miles long and offers a remarkable diversity of habitats. Shaped like a seahorse and with volcanoes over 5000 feet of altitude, it is also the place of birth of vast mangrove extensions. Elizabeth Bay is the only place of the Earth where old tropical mangrove forests and penguins can be conjugated on the same sentence. The ecosystem is also the residence of spotted eagle rays, sea turtles and a nursery for fish and marine invertebrates. With the outboards off and using only our oars for speed, we will enjoy this serene array of life.

Day 5

MORENO POINT  (ISABELA ISLAND)

Very early in the morning we go to a hike on a rough lava field of Punta Moreno. It’s a place where we can see all the 3 species of cactus: candelabra cactus, prickly pear cactus and lava cactus. This lava field has also a lot of pioneer plants.
Like surprise we find in middle of the lava field some brackish water pools with flamingos, common gallinules, white cheeked pintail ducks and paint-billed crakes.
On a dinghy drive we can see flightless cormorants, Galapagos Penguins and huge marine iguanas.

Navigation to Puerto Villamil.

Day 6

SIERRA NEGRA VOLCANO (ISABELA ISLAND)

Isabela Island is the largest and youngest islands in the Galapagos archipelago. From Puerto Ayora the navigation towards Isabela will start at about 1 a.m. arriving at about 6 a.m.to the port of Puerto Villamil. At 6:30 a.m. you will be awaked up by the guide and breakfast will be ready at 7:30 a.m. We head up to the highlands of the Sierra Negra Volcano. Sierra Negra (Black Mountain) is a large shield-type volcano located at the South eastern end of Isabela Island and it rises to an altitude of 1124m. It sits between with the volcanoes Cerro Azul to the west and Alcedo to the north. It is also one of the most active of the Galapagos volcanoes with the most recent historic eruption in October 2005. Our guided tour of the volcano starts at Puerto Villamil with a car drive of about 30 minutes to where we start our 1 hour walk towards the rim of the giant caldera along its East side. The view is really amazing and impressive since the caldera, with dimensions of 7.2 x 9.3 kms, is considered the 2nd biggest crater in the world (after the Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania). From the several viewpoints located along the rim of the crater we can observe down inside of the crater the recent lava flow of the 2005 volcanic eruption. After another 2 hour hike from the rim of the Sierra Negra crater, the area known as Volcan Chico is located, an interesting sight where it is possible to observe some fumes, and explore this Martian-like landscape. From here we can also observe the faraway volcanoes of Isabela Island. This last visit is recommended for those tourists with good physical conditions. Return to our trek start point and transport back to Puerto Villamil.

GIANT TURTLE BREEDING CENTER

In the afternoon we will take a walk through the wetlands, we will go to the forest to see the gentle giants in their natural habitat in this reserve. With the giant turtle on the road to extinction in the late 1950s, this program was established to protect these noble creatures. We will also have the opportunity to observe iguanas and flamingos taking sun.

Day 7

CORMORANT POINT (FLOREANA ISLAND)

Following a four-hour navigation from Puerto Ayora we will do a wet landing on a volcanic olivine beach. Punta Cormorant lays on the northern shore of Floreana and is the house of greater flamingos and sea turtles. On one side, the point is partially flooded with a brackish lagoon where flamingos nest and feed. Whimbrels, herons and stilts are other common shore and migratory birds of the wetlands. On the other side sea turtles use every corner of a white sand beach to deliver their eggs. You often see stingrays and reef sharks from the shore and if you are lucky turtles ending basking.

DEVIL´S CROWN

Considered one of the best places to do snorkel, here you can observe tropical fish, sea lions, rays and sharks.

POST OFFICE BAY

Visit Post Office Bay and learn about its unique history. In the late 18th century, English whaling vessels placed a barrel here to be used as a post office. Today, the box is used mainly by tourists, who may drop off and pick up unstamped letters to be carried to far destinations. Continue the tradition – leave a letter and take one to deliver (be sure it makes it to the correct location)!.

Navegation to Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island).

Day 8

DAPHNE ISLAND

Travel to Daphne, a tiny conical island, home to nesting blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, Darwin's finches, and a variety of marine life. Observe from the boat as this island is dedicated to scientific research. This island was where Dr. Peter Grant conducted a long-term study of Darwin's finches.

After this final visit, you will be transferred to the Baltra airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.
